With 20 years experience as a veterinarian I can tell you, I've seen it all. No, not every disease or situation of animal suffering possible, but rather every permutation of human emotion, motivation and intelligence possible. Of this, I am sure.
An amazing lot we are and what's more it is more amazing how the vagaries of the life and death of our animals are woven into our own lives, and deaths. Many times the health outcome for a pet reflects the personality and priorities of its owner as much if not more than the disease, the treatment or my skill in dealing with either.
Many people, young and old alike, say they want to be a veterinarian, but few understand what this profession is really about. While the study, the love and the daily work are about the animals, the vast majority of the labor is with the public. When someone tells me they want to be a veterinarian because they love animals, I already know they don't understand.
